A View of Above
2021

A reconstructed assemblage of the opening title sequence from the feature film "The Shining" (1980) by Stanley Kubrick.
(begun 2011, completed 2021)

Shot in reverse perspective in the actual locations used in the feature film, the viewer is looking back, and up at the ominous "eye in the sky" which shadows the yellow Volkswagen as it winds its way up the American Rockies to the Overlook Hotel.

The intent was to replicate the framing, choreography, and pacing of the original shots in the sequence in duration as well as their relationship to the sun and weather to best replicate the original, but from an altogether different perspective; no longer a complicit voyeur of the hapless victim.

As a side note of interest, notable loss of snow and glacial melt 40 years after the feature film footage was shot.
